Irish Huguenot Archive

The Representative Church Body Library at Churchtown in Dublin has been the home for the Irish Huguenot Archive since its establishment in 1993 by the Irish Section of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

The collection consists of most of the publications of the Huguenot Society of London and its successor, the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland. It also houses a large miscellaneous body of printed and manuscript material mostly relating to the Huguenot presence in Ireland. The archive seeks to acquire any printed and manuscript material relating to the Huguenot refuge in Ireland.

The Irish ‘Huguenot Family Archive’, which consists of documents submitted by members of the Irish Society relating to their own families, is also housed here. For a form to assist depositors in submitting their own family archive documents, click here.

Each deposit is provided with a unique archive number. Members should quote this unique number when making supplementary submissions to their Family Archive.

Depositors are asked to sign a Usage Release Form providing the Archive Custodians with permission to make the material available for viewing by the general public in perpetuity.

The archive currently includes materials related to the following families: Boileau, Carton, Couillette, Cormiere, Crommelin, de Bernieres, de la Cherois, de Joncourt, du Bourdieu, Jeanette, Mangin, Payne, Rondeau, Stephens, Truffet and Vigne.

(Note: Not all of these family names are Huguenot, but materials related to them have been included in the archive because they have featured in family reports as a result of marriage to Huguenot refugee descendants in Ireland).

A publication, written by the Librarian and Archivist of the Church of Ireland, Dr Raymond Refaussé, offers an introduction to the archives and manuscripts of the Church of Ireland. The publication is called: Church of Ireland records (2nd ed., Four Courts Press, Dublin, 2006) and is available from www.amazon.co.uk.

Books, pamphlets and manuscripts in the collection may be consulted in the Library reading room during the normal opening hours (9.30am-1pm and 2pm-5pm Monday to Friday).
